Why infrared heating foil is used to temper billiard tables?

Tempered balls and a heated table ensure optimum rolling characteristics

In professional billiards, heated tables are used in addition to tempered balls. Heating the cloth and the balls to 25-30°C (depending on the cloth) has the advantage that it stretches perfectly and evenly and the balls therefore roll incredibly easily during the shot. It is only through heating that it is possible to play professional billiards.

In the past, the granite boards covered with the billiard cloth (weighing approx. 800-900 kg in match billiards, depending on the thickness) were usually heated with heating wires/heating cables laid in snakes and attached to a wooden board.

This variant, which is no longer up to date, requires a hollow space under the stone slabs to be heated. This means that the air in this cavity must first be heated so that the stone slab is heated in turn. Since this system is not airtight at the bottom, part of the generated heat is lost again, which makes the system very inefficient and causes high heating costs.

Infrared heating film as a retrofit option

Since about 95% of the "old" billiard tables used throughout Europe are still in use, one quickly comes across the modern infrared heating foils when looking for a modern heating solution or a corresponding retrofit option.

Besides the affordable purchase price of the heating foils, the material thickness of less than 1 mm, a good and robust quality, as well as the almost full-surface heating area compared to the heating cable, the heating foils are also predestined for this application due to their high efficiency and thus low energy consumption.

The heating foil is laid out directly on a hard fibre board and fixed with adhesive strips during conversion/installation. The temperature sensor required to control/monitor the foil temperature by means of a thermostat can simply be inserted directly into the panel. The hardboard panel with the foils is placed on the frame of the table, on which the stone slab is then placed directly. The heating foil thus lies directly against the stone slab without any hollow space and the heat generated cannot escape downwards through the hardboard.

Customer opinion (Andreas Hofer):

The system has not only proven itself at our club, but also at another friendly club from which we received the tip to use the infrared heating foil. Numerous championships have already been held on their tables equipped with infrared heating foil. This table heating system saves our billiard club in Bruck an der Leitha immense heating costs.
