Electric underfloor heating does not always have to be laboriously installed within the screed. Particularly in the case of renovations, modernisations or the retrofitting of individual rooms, there is a demand for low-profile heating systems that can be integrated neatly, quickly and with as little installation depth as possible. This is exactly where aluminium heating mats come into their own.

They are particularly suitable for floating laminate and parquet floors, where they provide pleasant, even warmth directly beneath the floor covering. Whether in the living room, bedroom, children’s room, home office or holiday home: with the right aluminium heating mat, you can noticeably enhance your living comfort without having to install visible radiators or make major alterations to the building structure.

What exactly is an aluminium heating mat?

An aluminium heating mat is an electric heating system in which a heating conductor is attached to an aluminium-coated backing material. The aluminium plays an important role here: it helps to ensure even heat distribution across the floor surface and reduces the risk of localised overheating.

Unlike traditional thin-bed heating mats, which are embedded in tile adhesive or levelling compound, the aluminium heating mat is laid dry and as a floating installation. The typical floor structure consists of the subfloor, a suitable underlay, the aluminium heating mat and, finally, the floating laminate or parquet flooring. This makes the system particularly suitable where wet installation is not desired or where the floor structure is to remain as simple as possible.

Ideal for laminate and parquet flooring

Aluminium heating mats are particularly suitable for floor coverings that are laid as a floating floor and have a sufficiently stable subfloor. These include, in particular, laminate flooring and many types of parquet flooring with an HDF or MDF subfloor.

It is always important to ensure that the manufacturer has approved the specific floor covering for use with underfloor heating. In addition, the maximum permissible surface temperature of the floor covering must be observed. The system is therefore controlled by a suitable thermostat with a floor sensor, so that the temperature can be reliably monitored and limited.

Uniform heat distribution plays a particularly important role with laminate and parquet flooring. The aluminium layer of the heating mat helps to distribute the heat from the heating conductor more widely. This creates a pleasant warmth underfoot without placing excessive strain on specific areas of the floor.

Easy installation without screed or adhesive

A major advantage of the aluminium heating mat is its straightforward installation. Once the subfloor has been prepared, a suitable underlay is laid out first. The aluminium heating mat is then unrolled onto this and adjusted to fit the room.

The mat can be laid quickly, particularly in rectangular rooms. At the end of a run, the backing material is cut, the mat is turned and continued in the next direction. Care must be taken not to shorten or damage the heating conductor itself. Any exposed areas are then reconnected and covered with suitable aluminium tape.

Depending on the room size and heating output, even larger areas can be neatly covered in this way. As twin heating cables are powered from one side only, there is no need for the time-consuming task of routing a second cable end back. This simplifies planning and reduces the amount of cabling required.

What level of power is appropriate?

Aluminium heating mats are available in different power ratings. Lower power ratings are often sufficient for floor temperature control alone or as a comfortable supplementary heating source. If, on the other hand, the electric underfloor heating is to provide a larger proportion of the room heating, a more powerful model may be advisable. As a rough guide:

  • 80 W/m² is particularly suitable for well-insulated areas or for maintaining a comfortable floor temperature.

  • 100 W/m² is a good solution if slightly more heating output is required,
    but the heating is primarily used for comfort or as supplementary heating.

  • 150 W/m² is an option if a higher heating output is required or if the aluminium heating mat, provided the
    structural conditions are suitable, is to be used as the main heating system.

Whether electric underfloor heating is sufficient as the main heating system always depends on the building, the insulation, the heated area and the room’s heating requirements. If in doubt, individual project planning is recommended.

Why aluminium heating mats can be a good alternative to heating films

Heating films and aluminium heating mats are both frequently used beneath floating floor coverings. However, they differ significantly in their construction. 

A heating film uses flat heating strips and is particularly thin. An aluminium heating mat, on the other hand, uses a heating cable fixed to an aluminium-coated backing material. This gives it a robust construction and makes it very practical to install, particularly in larger, regularly shaped rooms.

Another advantage is the single-sided connection cable in twin heating systems. This makes the installation clearer, as it is not necessary to route both ends of the heating circuit back to the connection point.

Important: Aluminium heating mats are not suitable for vinyl flooring

A common question is: Can an aluminium heating mat also be laid under vinyl?

The clear answer is: No, aluminium heating mats are generally not suitable for vinyl floors.

The reason lies in the required floor structure. Vinyl flooring, particularly click vinyl, design flooring, LVT or SPC flooring, usually requires underlays that are highly pressure-resistant and comparatively hard. Underlays with high compressive strength, for example 400 kPa, are often used for this purpose. This high compressive strength is important to protect the flooring’s click joints and ensure the floor does not give way too much under load.

However, it is precisely this property that poses a problem with an aluminium heating mat. The heating conductor of the aluminium heating mat must be able to lie flush within the floor structure. For this to happen, the underlay beneath it must yield sufficiently. A hard vinyl underlay with high compressive strength, does not yield enough to accommodate the heating conductor properly. This can result in an uneven installation.

The consequences can vary depending on the floor covering and the load: the floor may rest on the heating conductor in certain areas, the click joints may be subjected to additional stress, and the installation will not comply with the intended system configuration. For this reason, aluminium heating mats should not be used under vinyl flooring.

Which type of electric underfloor heating is suitable for vinyl flooring?

For vinyl flooring, other heating systems are suitable, as they are better suited to the flat and pressure-stable structure. It is particularly important to ensure a very low installation height and a suitable underlay that is approved for use with vinyl.

In many cases, electric heating films are the more suitable solution, provided that the floor covering, the underlay and the entire structure are suitable for use with electric underfloor heating. Here too, the following applies: the flooring manufacturer’s approvals and the technical specifications regarding maximum temperature must always be observed.

Anyone wishing to install electric underfloor heating beneath vinyl flooring should therefore not simply opt for an aluminium heating mat, but rather choose a system specifically designed for vinyl, design flooring or SPC click flooring.

Control via Thermostat and Floor Sensor

To ensure that the electric floor heating system operates comfortably and safely, the aluminum heating mat is controlled by a suitable thermostat. The floor sensor measures the temperature within the floor structure and enables reliable regulation of the floor temperature. This prevents the floor covering from becoming unnecessarily hot or the permissible temperature limits from being exceeded.

The floor sensor should be installed in a suitable conduit. This not only facilitates proper positioning between two heating conductors but also allows for the sensor to be replaced later, if necessary, without having to reopen the floor. It is important that the sensor can reliably measure the actual floor temperature and is not placed directly on top of the heating conductor.

Accurate temperature control is particularly important for laminate and hardwood flooring, as wood-based materials and decorative floors can be sensitive to excessively high temperatures. According to DIN EN 1264, a maximum surface temperature of 29 °C applies in living areas. However, many flooring manufacturers recommend lower limit values as a precaution, in some cases as low as 27 °C. Therefore, in addition to the general standard, the specifications of the respective flooring manufacturer should always be followed.

With the right thermostat, you can precisely set the desired temperature and reliably limit the maximum floor temperature. Depending on the model, you can also use scheduling functions, frost protection features, or app controls. This ensures that the aluminum heating mat only heats when heat is actually needed. This improves comfort, protects the flooring, and helps control energy consumption at the same time.

Conclusion: Comfortable warmth for floating laminate and hardwood floors

Aluminum heating mats are a practical solution for anyone who wants to combine laminate or hardwood flooring with electric floor heating. They can be installed using a dry, floating method, require no screed, and provide even heat distribution across the aluminum-coated backing material.

They offer a convenient way to retrofit pleasant underfoot warmth, especially for renovations, modernizations, or individual living areas. Depending on their power output, they can be used as supplemental heating, for floor temperature control, or—under the right conditions—even as the primary heating source.

However, aluminum heating mats are not the right choice for vinyl flooring. Because vinyl typically requires hard, pressure-resistant underlayment, the heating conductor cannot be flush with the floor structure. For vinyl, therefore, specially designed heating film or heating system solutions should be used.
