Mi-Heat MI-MC WiFi controller for outdoor and gutter heating
New Wi-Fi controls for outdoor heating systems and gutter heating systems: automatically regulate snow and ice clearance
When snow, ice and freezing wet conditions become a problem, electric outdoor heating systems and gutter heating systems offer a reliable solution. They help to keep key outdoor areas such as driveways, ramps, footpaths, steps, entrance areas and gutters safe and accessible.
However, to ensure that such a heating system does not run continuously but is only activated when it is really necessary, the right control system is essential. This is precisely where our new MI-MC WiFi control systems come in: they combine automatic snow and ice clearance with user-friendly operation, precise sensor monitoring and modern Wi-Fi/app connectivity.
Why control is so important in antifreeze systems
An electric outdoor heating system or gutter heating system is primarily intended to operate when there is a real risk of slippery conditions, snow, ice or meltwater. A simple thermostat that only reacts to a specific temperature may switch the heating on even in cold but dry weather. Whilst this is technically possible, it is not always advisable.
Control systems that detect humidity as well as temperature are more efficient. This is because, in practice, snow and ice usually form when low temperatures and humidity coincide. If both factors are monitored, the heating system can be operated in a much more needs-based manner.
The new MI-MC WiFi controllers therefore monitor not only the air temperature but also the humidity at the respective sensor. The connected heating system is only activated when the set temperature conditions are met and humidity is detected. As a result, the system does not run continuously, but operates automatically and in a targeted manner.
MI-MC WiFi controller with floor sensor for outdoor heating systems
The MI-MC WiFi control set for outdoor heating with floor sensor has been developed for electric snow and ice clearance systems on outdoor surfaces. It is particularly suitable for areas that need to remain safe for pedestrians or vehicles in winter, for example:
- Garage driveways
- Courtyard driveways
- Ramps
- Basement access points
- Footpaths
- Entrance areas
- Outdoor staircases
- Private and commercial traffic areas
The MI-GS ground sensor supplied is installed flush with the heated surface. The sensor surface is aligned horizontally upwards so that moisture can be reliably detected. It is particularly advisable to position it in the dampest, shadiest and lowest part of the installation, as this is where snow, ice or freezing wetness usually persists for the longest.
An important advantage: the ground sensor features an internal heating module. This heats any snow or ice on the sensor surface, enabling moisture to be detected and analysed more effectively. As a result, the connected outdoor heating system is automatically activated when the conditions for snow or ice formation are met.
MI-MC WiFi controller with gutter sensor for gutter heating systems
For roof applications, the MI-MC WiFi control unit with MI-RS gutter sensor for gutter heating is the ideal solution. It has been developed to provide demand-based control of electric gutter heating systems and is suitable for:
- Gutters
- Downpipes
- Roof edge areas
- Drainage areas on roofs
- Canopies
- Gutter and pipe trace heating
- Frost protection systems for roof areas
Ice can form quickly in gutters and downpipes, particularly in wintry conditions. Meltwater can no longer drain away reliably, gutters can freeze over, and dangerous icicles or ice loads can form. A gutter heating system helps ensure the free flow of condensation and meltwater and can prevent frost damage.
The MI-RS gutter sensor is installed in the gutter with the sensor surface facing upwards, ideally at the entrance to the downpipe or directly beneath a drip edge. Here too, a damp, shaded area is particularly suitable, as critical conditions can be detected early on in such locations.
Like the ground sensor, the gutter sensor also features an internal heating module. This warms the snow and ice on the sensor surface, thereby ensuring reliable moisture detection.
Automatic operation with a reheat period
A key advantage of the MI-MC WiFi control units is the adjustable post-heating time. As soon as no further moisture is detected, the system does not switch off immediately, but continues to heat for a set period. This allows any residual moisture to dry out, which can prevent further ice formation.
This is particularly useful in changeable winter weather, when meltwater, residual snow or residual moisture are still present even though the actual snowfall has already stopped. The post-heating function ensures that the heated surface or the gutter does not cool down again too soon.
Convenient control via Wi-Fi and the Tuya Smart app
The system can be conveniently controlled via the Tuya Smart app. This allows important settings to be adjusted easily via a smartphone and the system’s current operating status to be checked quickly.
Depending on the application, settings such as temperature limits, post-heating times or manual heating phases can be adjusted. In addition, the display shows key operating parameters such as air temperature, humidity and sensor temperature. This enables users to keep a closer eye on the system’s status at all times.
A forced heating mode is also available for special situations. This allows the connected heater to be manually activated for a heating phase, for example for a functional test or in the event of particular weather conditions.
For new builds, refurbishments and timely preparations for winter
The best time to plan outdoor heating is not when the first frost arrives, but well before that. Electric heating can be easily integrated into the structure, particularly in the case of outdoor areas that are being newly paved, concreted or refurbished.
Whether it’s a driveway, ramp, external staircase or guttering: planning the installation well in advance ensures that the system is ready for use in good time before winter. Many jobs are easier to carry out during the warmer months, as surfaces are dry, easily accessible and, due to the weather conditions, simpler to work on.
Snow and ice clearance as and when required, rather than round-the-clock operation
The new Mi-Heat MI-MC WiFi controllers are the ideal addition to modern electric frost protection systems. They ensure that outdoor heating systems and gutter heating systems do not run unnecessarily, but are activated specifically when temperature and humidity levels indicate the presence of snow, ice or moisture that could freeze.
The result: greater convenience, more control and more efficient operation of the connected heating systems.
